The destruction of body and soul in Gehenna

The destruction of body and soul in Gehenna

Written by Bro. Josh Sparks.

Greetings to you in the name of our Risen Savior, Jesus the Christ.

In recent months and weeks we have looked at several topics that have been the cause of controvery for many in christendom. We have examined such subjects as; what the bible teaches about death. Also we have looked at such topics as Is anyone in Heaven? and Is man a spirit? We have also through sound bible teaching taught the truth that man is a living soul and not an immortal soul. Anybody who teaches man has immortallity within his self or her self is teaching false doctrine. Only Jesus has immortality and this was given to him in his body which is to say in his flesh after his resurrection.

( 1 Timothy 6:16) who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. As I said this self sustaining life, immortality is given by the Spirit of God and Jesus himself tells us in ( John 5:25-26) 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself. Jesus here was not speaking of mere mortal life, ie mortal life, but was speaking about immortallity. Now we know Jesus was not immortal until after His death, Burial and resurrection or else he could not have died, but He did and He through His death and Resurrection can grant to us eternal life also.( John 17:1-3) 1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Today we will look at another such topic of importance misrepresented by modern day preachers and traditional church leaders who teach according to tradition and make God’s word of no effect. Jesus was rebuked because his disciples didnt do according to the traditions of the Elders. These traditions were fleshly traditions such as washing pots and vessels, etc was man made traditions that was no where found in the Law of Moses but was man made and enforced on the people by the religious leaders of that day. Jesus told them (Mark 7: 6-13)6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far from Me,  7 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’  8  For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Today we will look at two misinterpreted passages of scripture and look at them in light of God’s Word the bible and we will expose the lie being taught by modern day christendom, ie the traditions of the elders. Do you know why you believe what you do? Can you provide those who ask with biblical references when questioned about what you believe and why you believe what you do? If not you need to spend more time in personal bible study and in prayer. ( 2 Timothy 2:15) Be diligent(Study) to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We here at bible’s Truths Revealed are dedicated to getting you, the reader to open your bibles and become disciples of Jesus Christ. Jesus declared in ( John 8 : 31-32) 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

God is able to destroy both the Soul and Body in Gehenna.

Today we will look at two passages of scripture. The first Matthew 10:28, and second Luke 12:4-5.

(Matthew 10:28 )And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. The word hell in this verse comes from the greek word Gehenna Strongs # 1067 which means the place of the future punishment call “Gehenna” or “Gehenna of fire”. This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction. The valley of hinnom was the picture of utter destruction. This is the picture Jesus was trying to paint for his audience. Judgement will be everlasting meaning it will be an eternal sentence of destruction. The key word in this verse is destroy.

This word destroy comes from the greek word Apollymi Strongs # 622 which means to put out of the way entirely, abolish, put an end to ruin. Also to render useless, to kill, to declare that one must be put to death, to perish, to be lost, ruined, destroyed. Notice Jesus didnt say fear the one who will torment the body and soul in Gehenna but destroy signifying that when one dies the second death they will be destroyed forever or annihilated. The wicked will become ashes under the souls of our feet. ( Malachi 4: 3) You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet On the day that I do this,” Says the LORD of hosts.

We see Jesus said fear not the one who can kill the body. To kill here means to inflict mortal death. Notice Jesus uses the word kill when speaking in reference of mortal life, and then uses the word destory when speaking of himself having the abillity to destroy both body and soul in gehenna (hell). In our next study we will look at the word hell and the false doctrine being preached concerning hell. We will look at the meaning of the word hell and give you every scripture in the Old and New Testaments where the word is used. We will examine the scriptures to find that the lake of fire is a place of future judgement and destruction and not a place of eternal torment or ongoing punishment but a place of final destruction which is to say the second death. We will also look at some of Jesus statements, where the worm dies not and the fire is not quenched and present the scripture in context and declare the truth as it is written. It is also significant to understand Jesus used the Valley of Hinnom the place of utter destruction as the mental picture of future judgement showing judgement is forever and destruction means being destroyed and not being given eternal life to be tormented by fire forever and ever.

Man can kill the body so when Jesus uses the word body he is speaking in reference to this present dying life and we see man can stop our present life or mortal life but cant destroy the soul or the future being which God has promised will be restored by the resurrection. Since we dont have the power to resurrect ourselves we surely will not have power to destroy the soul of another man or woman only God alone has the power to utterly destroy the soul and body.

Lets look at the passage in Luke.

(Luke 12:4-5) 4 “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! Mortal death is temporal and only God has the power to release the dead from their prison and give to those who are obedient the resurrection to life and the disobedient the resurrection of condemnation.( John 5:28 – 29) 28  Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

The fact of the matter is that Jesus will completely and utterly destroy this mortal life which is to say the body this present dying life and the soul our future being in gehenna fire that will be everlasting destruction if we disobey His Word. Jesus will resurrect the dead in due to and all in the graves will hear His voice and rise and those who believed in the resurrection will rise to life eternal and reward and the wicked to their reward. To the many who did not hear the Gospel, they will be raised to life and be taught (Isaiah 26:9) With my soul I have desired You in the night, Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early; For when Your judgments are in the earth,  The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. These will be taught and the devil will be released for a little season to test the faith of those who are obedient and for those born during Jesus Reign as King to be tested( see Revelation 20: 7-10). In this present time men can kill our bodies but nothing can stop God from bringing the dead to life again and God’s plan is to revive and bring to life the righteous dead and to punish the wicked and to as Paul testified be testified as God’s ransom for mankind and it’s sins. ( 1 Timothy 2:6) who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Our revived soul will have new bodies ( Spiritual or natural) each seed his own kind of body and these none can kill. God and God alone can only destroy this future being so Jesus says dont fear man he can kill but it is temporary. Fear the one who has power to destroy you in gehenna fire. God controls and has the issues of life everlasting, dont fear man, but fear the one who can destroy in gehenna or the second death this present dying body of existence and all hope and promise for a future existence. This is not preached in the church because the church has already in it’s own words stood at the great throne of judgement and have said well Lord there not baptist, or there not methodist, or there not apostolic and have judged men and sentenced them to the lake of fire and none of us have that right nor power. Sure you can kill me but God promised He would resurrect me from the dead and He and He along has the issues of everlasting life and can grant life or death. Lets not be so quick to judge and destroy because we dont have that right or power.

I write these things in the Name of Jesus Christ.
